HELP!

I don't do this kind of post very often but I've been struggling with what I think is a pretty common parenting issue and hoping some of you that have been through it before can help. Lucy has been potty training since November and for the most part has it down. Very rarely does she have a potty accident and the pooping thing is FINALLY coming along as well. Problem is NIGHT TIME! The first two weeks she was in underwear, I still had pull-ups and/or diapers on overnight. She was literally DRY almost every day of those first two weeks and then slowly started waking up wetter and wetter (ok, I'm pretty sure that isn't a word but you get my drift). Anyway, I figured she was just getting used to the fact that she could pee in that pull up and was starting to get lazy...GROSS! So last week I told her no more pull ups at night. I've been waking her at least once throughout the night to go potty and I'd say about 75% of the time, she's still having an accident. What do I do? Do I go back to diapers or pull-ups at night? UGH! I don't want to set her up for failure and have her feel bad that she's having so many accidents but I also don't want her to pee in her pull-up just because she is too lazy to go on the toilet! I pretty sure I'm confusing the heck out of her! HELP!

Go back to pull ups. In many kids, it takes way way longer to get their bladders to hold urine all.night.long.
I know people who had kids in pullups for a year or two after the daytime training was done.
Btw, my kids would be dry during the night for a week in the pull up. Every time I did a nite in panties, they would be. Typical.

Our pediatrician says its very common for kids to not be able to stay dry at night even up to age 6. Don't sweat it. Everyone will be less stressed and you'll be doing a lot less laundry if you go back to pull-ups for night. Eventually, her pull-ups will be dry in the mornings consistently and then you'll know to give it another try. Good Luck.

Pull ups, she will not be wearing them when she is 16. If she is being lazy, she's two and for right now that is okay. The problem wiht Lucy is she is so advanced you just assume she gets it. I still have problems with Anthony at night.

My son is 4 and he REALLY wants to wear underwear at night because he is starting to notice his friends don't wear pullups at night since he has had a couple sleep overs...but he sleeps like a rock and just doesn't wake up when he has to go. I don't worry about it because my husband and I were both the same way when we were little and I know there was nothing I could do about it unless some one woke me up twice a night to go potty. I wouldn't stress about night time training at all just be thankful that she is trained during the day!

I agree with all of them Kris...just go back to pull ups and she will get it. It took Nora awhile too. But every kid is different. My sister-in-law wakes up my 5 year old niece twice a night to go potty yet. I asked her about it because I thought it was crazy and I've never done that with Nora, but she said that's what she needed. When Lucy starts waking up on her own to go potty you know she is getting close.

Yep, keep using pull-ups. It seems like going backwards, but her bladder just isn't big enough and she sleeps too soundly. I know it sucks to have to keep buying them, but it might be worth it to not have to do wash bedding every day! Good luck!

They're all right, Kris. Night and day potty training are two distinct entities. My guess is this has very little--if anything--to do with laziness. It's all about the combination of bladder control, sound sleeping, and being 2. Her body is still learning to recognize the sensation during her sleep cycle.

I agree with the rest - back to the pull-ups. Try Cheekybum on Etsy for some custom reusable pull-ups if you're ready to ditch the throw-aways.

Wow. I guess they all said it for me!

Thanks girls! I think I'm heading back to pull ups but of course she slept through the entire night last night and woke up dry! Go figure. Yes, I do dislike pull ups but since my washing machine broke, I'm down to laundry once a week at my parents so anything "reusable" is out of the question. I think I'll use diapers since they seem to smell better and cost less than pull ups.

I have to agree Kris, pull ups are the way to go. Also do you take her to a chiropractor. This helps our kids when they start to have accidents at night. Brayden is seven and sometime still has an accident. Like someone else said, she wont wear them when she is 16 but at that time we may want them to! Good luck!

With my daughter, we used pull-ups, if she was dry she would use the pull up again the next night. Later in the potty training, I made sure she went potty right before bed and stopped giving her any liquids close to bedtime.

i too would say just go back to pull-ups, or the equivalent, but also to limit fluid intake past a certain time at night.

and have you tried "positive imagining" with her before bed? where you play a little game in which she imagines herself waking up dry.

and "dry talking" - whispering "dry thoughts" to her once she's asleep.

it may seem a little goofy, but i hear it works really well with some kids!! :)

(and i think moms end up being the goofiest sometimes anyways! :)

I'd say go back to Pullups and reuse the dry ones. Ellie (now 5) was trained around 2 1/2, but then about three months into it started having an accident once or twice a week at night, then every night. We couldn't figure what was going on. After talking to some other moms, we decided to do pull ups over her underwear at night, we called it her "extra protection". We then made a point of waking her to potty before we turned in for the night. After a few weeks, she started getting up around 10:30 or so herself to go. After a few weeks of dry pullups, we stopped using them. And she has had only 2 accidents since that time at night. Funny thing, she came home from kindergarten yesterday and told us that she raised her hand in music class but the teacher wouldn't call on her so eventually she just got up and left the room to go to the bathroom, got to the toilet, then peed on the floor before she could get her pants down. Silly girl!!
